Wrestling Journey — Athletic Identity Beyond Football

From DuBois to The Battering Ram

Wrestling was not a late novelty in Frank Fuller’s life. The surviving record begins with varsity wrestling at DuBois, follows a strong senior season and a later-reported 1948 Junior AAU championship, then reappears after the 1955 football season when Frank worked professional matches in Kentucky and the Midwest. By 1958, the Los Angeles Rams defensive tackle had a new ring identity: The Battering Ram.

A Second Athletic Thread Running Through Frank’s Story

The evidence connects high-school wrestling, later professional wrestling, and Frank’s football-era public identity without treating them as the same competition record.

Wrestling Timeline

From Schoolboy Heavyweight to Professional Billing

1945–46

Early Varsity Evidence

The surviving database records Frank at 2–5 during the 1945–46 season. A 185-pound championship bracket identifies him as a DuBois sophomore and preserves one specific tournament result: Tyrone’s Merle Bickle defeated him by a 6–0 decision.

1947–48

Senior Season — 10–3

Frank’s surviving senior-season record is 10–3. School material identifies him as a senior wrestling letterman, while his biography describes him competing in the varsity heavyweight class and doing a remarkable job.

1948

Junior AAU Champion

A later University of Kentucky biography states that Frank was a junior AAU champion as a schoolboy in 1948. It is his strongest documented high-school wrestling honor.

The surviving source does not identify the tournament, location, geographic level, weight class, or exact AAU division, so the exhibit does not upgrade this to a state or national championship.
After 1955

Kentucky and the Midwest

The 1958 Associated Press account says that after the 1955 football season Frank worked the mat game in Kentucky and the Midwest. This establishes professional wrestling activity before the 1958 publicity announcing a new phase of his wrestling career.

Before 1958

Kentucky Colonel

Rams material and the 1958 Associated Press story preserve Kentucky Colonel as Frank’s earlier wrestling identity. The name connected his wrestling persona to his University of Kentucky years.

Jan. 30, 1958

The Battering Ram

The Associated Press reported that the 6-foot-4, 245-pound Rams defensive tackle would now be billed as The Battering Ram. The football team name became part of his professional wrestling identity.

The crop provides a focused visual connection to the high-school wrestler later remembered in professional coverage as having learned the sport in DuBois.

Professional Wrestling — Identity and Reinvention

Kentucky Colonel → The Battering Ram

The professional record is strongest when it preserves the names Frank actually used and the places where the contemporary article says he worked. It does not require inventing a complete match ledger.

Earlier Billing
Kentucky Colonel

The 1958 article says Frank had used this name previously and ties the title to his University of Kentucky years. That is evidence of a wrestling identity—not evidence that he wrestled on the University of Kentucky varsity team.

1958 Billing
The Battering Ram

The new name joined his wrestling persona directly to his Los Angeles Rams identity. A 1958 Rams profile independently confirms that he wrestled professionally in the offseason as “The Battering Ram.”

Leo Nomellini — A Public Challenge

“I hope we’ll be able to settle this matter soon.”

Frank was speaking about fellow NFL lineman and professional wrestler Leo Nomellini. The same article says the two had joked about who could handle whom on the mat.

Two Athletic Identities That Kept Crossing

DuBois

Wrestling Built the Foundation

School evidence shows varsity wrestling, a senior letter, a strong surviving final-season record, and the later-reported Junior AAU honor before Frank became a Kentucky football player.

Los Angeles Rams

Football Became the Ring Persona

By 1958, Frank’s NFL identity was embedded in his wrestling billing. “The Battering Ram” turned the Rams association itself into part of the wrestling story.

Position

Size and Line Play Followed Him

The 1958 Associated Press story introduced him as a 6-foot-4, 245-pound defensive tackle while discussing professional wrestling, showing how the two public identities were presented together.

Archive Boundary

No Invented Match Record

The current public room preserves only the wrestling chronology and identities supported clearly by the mapped sources. A complete professional win-loss record is not claimed.

Recognition Connection

1948 Junior AAU Recognition

The wrestling honor belongs in both this story and the Awards Room, but each page has a different role: this room explains its place in Frank’s athletic development; Awards preserves the exact recognition label and evidence boundary.
