Newspaper coverage preserved more than what others thought about Frank Fuller. It also preserved Frank speaking for himself — about football, wrestling, injury, teammates, business, coaching, retirement, education, and the transition beyond professional sports.

Football — Kentucky
“The cheering by the students was so great that it inspired most of the UK players to play great football.”
Frank was speaking after Kentucky’s victory over Texas A&M. The same column described the game as one of his best.
Frank credited student enthusiasm with affecting the players themselves. The comment is one of the earliest surviving examples in the archive of Frank explaining how he experienced football rather than simply being described by others.

“Leo Nomellini and I used to kid about who could handle whom … I hope we’ll be able to settle this matter soon.”
Frank was discussing the possibility of meeting San Francisco 49ers star Leo Nomellini in professional wrestling while beginning the “Battering Ram” phase of his mat career.
This article directly preserves Frank’s challenge. It does not, by itself, prove that a Nomellini match later took place. The public room keeps the quotation and the event claim separate.

Bob Broeg’s “Fuller Enthusiasm” column preserved a cluster of Frank’s comments as he prepared to return from the 1960 broken leg.
“I’ve got to look forward to it, to prove my leg is all right.”
Training camp was a test of recovery and another chance to help a team he believed could contend.
“I was really proud, the way the team played and the way my Coast friends reacted.”
Frank had watched the Cardinals’ season-ending Pittsburgh game on television from California while injured.
“Couldn’t stand to be there and not be able to help.”
Walter Wolfner wanted Frank on the bench for the final three games, but Frank found being present without contributing too difficult.
“We shouldn’t get too high on preseason predictions.”
Frank was optimistic about the Cardinals but wanted the team judged against its difficult opening road schedule.
“It was a freak that it broke in the same place as the first time. They tell me it will be stronger than ever now.”
Frank discussed the lower-right-leg fracture suffered in 1960 in the same location as his earlier Rams injury and expressed confidence in the healed leg.
Business and Coaching — While Still Playing
“I’d like to make enough money to be able to afford to coach.”
The line was delivered with humor, but it directly documents Frank’s interest in coaching.
“My insurance business is mostly residual income now.”
Frank described an established income stream outside football.
“I’m expanding in the real estate business … I guess you would call me a developer.”
The same feature identified him with Fuller Development Corporation in Los Angeles.
“If it works out … I’ll be happy to buy the ball club.”
Frank joked that success in a major business venture might make him too old to play but wealthy enough to buy the Cardinals.
“I’m sure glad to see him.”
Frank was reacting to Jerry Norton’s presence at training camp and the defensive possibilities for 1961.

Retirement, Education and Life After Sports — 1973
“Because he has a college education … the professional football player is exposed to a lot things.”
Frank was discussing broader exposure and preparation around professional football in an Associated Press feature about athletes after sports.
“Everyone wants to say he’s associated with an athlete.”
The quote appeared in an Associated Press feature about employment and retirement advantages connected to an athlete’s public identity.
Frank’s 1973 wording about “a college education” is a comment about professional football players generally. The quotation is not used here as proof that Frank personally completed a University of Kentucky degree.
What His Words Reveal
Frank repeatedly framed football around helping the team — whether inspired by a crowd, studying film while injured, or refusing to sit passively on the sideline.
